Atlanta’s SweetWater Brewing Company announced Tuesday that it is moving its popular SweetWater 420 Festival from Candler Park to Centennial Olympic Park next spring.
Considered one of the city’s most celebrated Earth Day events, the popular festival will be commemorating 10 years of festivities in April 2014. The free festival drew nearly 60,000 folks in 2013.
“We have nothing but love and gratitude for the folks at Candler Park for being such incredible hosts to our festival over the years, however we’re very excited to now call Centennial Olympic Park home,” said SweetWater Brewing Company co-founder Freddy Bensch in a press release. “Approaching our 10-year anniversary, we wanted to look long-term for opportunities that will help grow the festival, bring on bigger entertainment and provide better access for local patrons and those traveling in for the fest. This change allows all of that, plus a bigger footprint right in the heart of downtown Atlanta.”
The announcement comes after some Midtown residents have called for Music Midtown to shift from Piedmont Park to another venue, possibly Centennial Olympic Park or Ft. McPherson. Last month, trash left behind by festivalgoers and park turf damage suffered as a result of steady rains followed by heavy foot traffic were a couple of reasons some locals are wondering if the popular festival might be better suited elsewhere.
