Last spring, Atlanta Streets Alive event drew hundreds of walkers and cyclists to N. Highland Ave. In 2013, the event will take over a section of Peachtree Street.
by Rebecca Serna At the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition’s Blinkie Awards earlier this month, Mayor Kasim Reed made a commitment of $50,000 to help bring Atlanta Streets Alive to Peachtree Street. As the executive director of Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, I cannot tell you how much this means, not only to members of our organization but to our city as a whole. Atlanta Streets Alive is an open streets initiative that the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition organizes for our community. Atlanta Streets Alive creates a vibrant experience of city streets for people on foot and on bike. This year, Peachtree Street will be opened to people and temporarily closed to cars, to celebrate human powered amusement and transportation. We are so excited to traverse Atlanta…

Sunday, January 6
By Ray Newman As we turn the calendar to 2013, we leave behind a year of successes and failures. It is easy to begin listing the failures, but I refuse to invest my time in being negative. Rather than dealing in the past, let us look forward into the future in our state of Georgia. On the second Monday of January, the Georgia General Assembly will open for the 40-day legislative session. There are some new people in places of leadership under the Gold Dome. It is felt by some people this will be positive in terms of moving legislation that is needed to help make our state stronger in ethics reform and care for those who need a voice. Without making sweeping statements about former or even current leaders, I choose to deal with issues. When…

Director Quentin Tarantino pays tribute to the Spaghetti Western, and it's shoot 'em up, rootin' tootin' fun!
It's funny, offbeat, and brutal. Based in the American South during the times of slavery, Jamie Foxx straps on a six-shooter or two, some cowboys boots and hat in "Django Unchained." "Django Unchained" can be found at Regal Atlantic Station Stadium 16. Daily Show times are at 10:50 a.m., 12:20 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 9:35 p.m., 11:50 p.m. and 1:10 a.m. It is also playing at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema at 12:15 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 7:15 p.m., 9:45 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. Foxx's Django character is taken by a bounty hunter, portrayed by Christoph Waltz. First they set out to get a few outlaws. Then they set their sites on getting Django's wife, Broomhilda, played by Kerry Washington. But wrangling…

Did you tell your children? Do you have advice to share with other parents on how to approach this delicate conversation?
Patch reported Wednesday that Peachtree Christian Church in north Midtown will be holding a special Service of Prayer and Remembrance for Newtown, Connecticut on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. Which leads us to another question of day concerning the events of the morning of Dec. 14 that came as a shock to all parents. We watched news of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut with tears in our eyes and a lump in our throats. While the rest of us went about our mornings last Friday, 26 innocent lives were lost at a suburban school much like the ones where we send our own children. Many questions were raised throughout that day and over the weekend, not the least of which was: "How do we explain this to our children?" Counselors, …

In the aftermath of the Kansas City Chiefs’ shooting tragedy, a Fox Sports commentator called the NRA the new Ku Klux Klan in an anti-gun statement.
Time for another Midtown Patch Question of the Day. Ever since last weekend's murder/suicide committed by Kansas City Chiefs starting linebacker Jovan Belcher, the issue of gun control has been brought back into the forefront of commentary. According to an article on Examiner.com, NBC Sports commentator Bob Costas was the first to be criticized by gun rights advocates for his diatribe against gun ownership during halftime at a Cowboys-Eagles. But a Saturday column by Fox Sports commentator Jason Whitlock, that Costas used as a piece of reference, went much further. And it didn’t end there. Whitlock backed it up going on to call the National Rifle Association “the new KKK" (Ku Klux Klan). “I did not go as far as I’d like to go because my …

Editor's note: Atlanta motorists are no strangers to the ongoing drama that is PARKatlanta, the firm contracted by the city of Atlanta to enforce parking codes. The company has been under fire for its enforcement policies leading to scores of complaints to Atlanta City Council members, including Kwanza Hall, whose district includes the Old Fourth Ward, parts of Little Five Points and Midtown. On Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the Atlanta City Council enacted changes in its contract with PARKatlanta. Among them: blocking the writing of tickets when signs are missing or meters are broken. The changes could prevent the situation a recent out-of-town visitor experienced Nov. 17 in Hall's district. That visitor, Chip Leister…

In a follow from Saturday's column on 'How to Have an Affair,' a metro Atlanta pastor gives some tips on how to change course and have a lasting affair.
Editor’s Note: On Friday, Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus shockingly resigned, citing an extramarital affair that demonstrated "extremely poor judgment." The 60-year-old Petraeus is certainly not the first high-profile figure to have been tempted into commiting infidelity. Here’s a list from the Huffington Post of 13 celebrities over age 50 who have admitted to having strayed from their significant other. According to statistics at Infideltyfacts.com, one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional, in 41 percent of marriages in the United States. Here at Midtown Patch, Local Voices contributor Carolyn Tucker, recently wrote about "How to Cope With Fear of Infidelity and the Anxiety it Brings." …
