APD increasing patrols along BeltLine's Eastside Trail

“We have officers on foot, bicycle and in an all-terrain vehicle. We want to make sure folks are safe while using the BeltLine.” - APD spokesperson Carlos Campos

Since its opening in October, thousands of people have hit the path to enjoy the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. But it’s also been a draw for thieves, too, and in response, the Atlanta Police Department is beefing up it presence along the 2.25-mile section of the BeltLine that runs from Irwin St. to 10th St. and Monroe Dr., connecting the neighborhoods of Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward, Midtown, Poncey Highland and Virginia Highland. Earlier this month, a 34-year-old man was jogging near the Old Fourth Ward Skate Park portion of the trail one afternoon when he was approached by three men, one whom was on a bicycle. According to the police, one of the suspects struck the jogger in the head with his fist, and another produced a gun. The men…

The tree planting will be divided into two groups: Volunteers should plan to arrive at 8:45 a.m. and bring their own water in a reusable container (no trash). BeltLine Police Force To Be Ready By Spring

The unit is being formed via a three-year $1.87 million federal Community Oriented Policing Services grant, which also calls for the city to contribute $966,075 in additional matching funds.

The Atlanta Police Department anticipates it will have its Path Force fully staffed and ready to begin patrols of the Atlanta BeltLine in the first or second quarter of next year. Speaking to a meeting of Neighborhood Planning Unit-M this week, Deputy Chief Ernest N. Finley Jr. said APD is currently looking to fill the 15 slots. The unit is being formed via a three-year $1.87 million federal Community Oriented Policing Services grant, which also calls for the city to contribute $966,075 in additional matching funds. The grant is enough to fund and create 15 positions. A grant requirement stipulates that the city hire military veterans, and APD has said it would pull from existing officers to staff the Path Force. APD announced the creation…

If I'm not mistaken the conditions of the federal grant are such that after 3 years we have to keep those officers on staff if we cannot afford to do so we have to pay ALL the grant back. Beware of the FEDS bearing gifts.   more ›

Construction is now underway at the northern end of the Atlanta BeltLine's Eastside Trail for a new pedestrian crossing at Monroe Drive and 10th Street.

A few weeks ago, one of the most anticipated public spaces in Atlanta officially opened with the Atlanta BeltLine's Eastside Trail. The new 2.25-mile long section of the Atlanta BeltLine, running from Irwin St. to 10th St. and Monroe Dr., connects the neighborhoods of Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward, Midtown, Poncey Highland and Virginia Highland. But as many trail users know, when the trail reaches Monroe, there are still safety concerns in attempting to cross Monroe to reach Piedmont Park and Park Tavern, especially during the rush hour commute. Those concerns will soon be alleviated somewhat as construction began this past week on new pedestrian signals and a 28-foot wide striped pedestrian crossing with new curb ramps built into the …
