One year of improvement funding could add 15 miles of “high quality bicycle infrastructure” for Atlanta.
It soon might get easier to pedal your bike around Atlanta as the City Council's Finance Committee on Thursday began considering allocating almost $2.5 million towards bicycle projects according to a post at the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition (ABC) website. The funds would come from Quality of Life bonds for complete Streets improvements and could add 15 miles of “high quality bicycle infrastructure” for Atlanta in 2013. This would be comparable to bike-friendly cities such as Seattle and Washington D.C. according to the ABC. The ABC is Atlanta’s largest bicycle advocacy nonprofit and its mission is to make it safer and easier to ride a bicycle in and around metro Atlanta. Following Friday night efforts geared toward promoting safety, cyclists will take off for a Tour de Lights bike ride throughout the city that will end at Octane Coffee on the westside.
Atlanta City Councilman Michael Julian Bond is partnering with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition (ABC) to promote bicycle safety Friday evening by donating bicycle lights for the annual “Let’s Get Visible” initiative followed by a bicycle “Tour de Lights.” Bond and members of ABC will hold a news conference in Woodruff Park at 6 p.m. to promote the annual initiative. Following the light distribution, cyclists will take off for Mobile Social’s Tour de Lights bike ride throughout the city, touring some of the best holiday light destinations in Atlanta. Bicycle initiatives demonstrate City’s commitment to key partnerships and investments with new bicycle improvements aimed at safety
Last week, Mayor Kasim Reed and various bicycle transportation partners, including the Atlanta City Council, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, Midtown Alliance and the Georgia Institute of Technology, announced a pair of new initiatives to boost rider safety, sustainability and access. During a news conference at Tech Square near the intersection of 5th and West Peachtree streets, there was a celebration of the completion of a bicycle improvement project. Alterations to the intersection have resulted in the City’s first raised bicycle track, green bicycle lane, two-stage left-turn box and bicycle signal at the intersection. City of Atlanta officials including Mayor Kasim Reed will join officials from Midtown Alliance, Georgia Tech, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and others for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday to celebrate the completion of new safety enhancements at Tech Square in Midtown. The initiative, which reportedly cost $34,000, was done to assist bikers cross busy West Peachtree Street along 5th Street. The project incorporates a series of bike turn lanes, a new bike pull-off area and cyclist-oriented signal push buttons connecting together existing bike lanes on either side of 5th St. at its convergence with West Peachtree.
