From Nov. 18 through Dec. 24, 2012, Kroger customers supported the annual campaign by purchasing $1, $3 and $5 icons. Each icon purchased benefited Feeding America food banks and helped to provide local families in need with approximately 3.9 to 19.5 meals. ACFB helps kick off Hunger Action Month

USDA reports 50 million Americans face hunger; Atlanta Community Food Bank distributed 37 million pounds of food and grocery products through its network of more than 600 partner agencies from July 2011 to June 2012.

As the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) kicked off Hunger Action Month, along with more than 200 other food banks across the nation, the annual food security report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was released, indicating that Americans are still struggling to put food on the table.  The report, which highlights food insecurity at national and state levels, shows that the number of food insecure people remains well above pre-recession totals. The USDA defines food security as access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. In 2007, the number of food insecure individuals was 36 million. The following year that number skyrocketed to nearly 50 million, and has remained at or near that …

ACFB Receives Generous Donation from Tyson Foods

Nearly 17 percent of the people living in the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s service area in metro Atlanta and north Georgia are food insecure, meaning that they don’t always know where they will find their next meal.

On Friday morning, Tyson Foods Inc. donated more than 30,000 pounds of protein to the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) to help fight hunger in Georgia. The donation is part of the company's 2012 “Show Us Your Nugget Face” promotion, where the public voted on their favorite children pictured with Tyson Chicken Nuggets, and Tyson Foods pledged to donate 1 million pounds of food to hunger relief organizations across America. "With nearly 340,000 children at risk of hunger in the Atlanta Community Food Bank's service area, partnerships like the one we have with Tyson are very important," ACFB Procurement Manager Holly Royston said in a statement. "We couldn't help nearly as many families without their support." Nearly 17 percent of the …

Plant a Row for the Hungry

Last year, the Atlanta Community Food Bank's Plant a Row for the Hungry season resulted in 106,292 pounds of donated food.

According to a report released by Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization, almost 17 percent of people in metro Atlanta and North Georgia aren’t always certain as to where their next meal will come from. In Fulton County, the number climbs to 19.5 percent. West Midtown’s Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) is a part of the Feeding America and understands that the oncoming summer months means the demand for food goes up as school-provided meals aren’t available. But summertime does mean gardens and the ACFB is encouraging Atlanta gardeners to plant an extra row of veggies in their gardens and donate the extra produce directly to those in need. The Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign was launched nationally in 1995 by…

Good day to help ACFB and Hands on Atlanta

Outstanding West Midtown non-profits do so much for so many, but Tuesday they're asking for a little help themselves.

A pair of West Midtown non-profits – the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) and Hands on Atlanta -  are asking for your help today. Founded in 1979, ACFB, located at 732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd., currently distributes more than 30 million pounds of food and other donated grocery items each year to more than 700 nonprofit partner agencies in 38 counties in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Tuesday, though, the group needs help in making sure elected leaders know how important hunger-relief programs are to you and to your community. In an open letter,  ACFB Director of Advocacy and Education Laura Lester writes: The Senate Agriculture Committee is set to release its Farm Bill over the next several days and we need to make sure that their bill …

Ring in the New Year with Good Deeds

If buying gifts, rushing around and sometimes forcing holiday smiles gets overwhelming, plan some volunteer or donation therapy in the coming weeks.

If buying gifts, rushing around and sometimes forcing holiday smiles gets overwhelming, plan some volunteer or donation therapy in the coming weeks. The Salvation Army makes sure its ubiquitous Red Kettles are where the shoppers are: online. Start your own Online Red Kettle, or give via a team that you want to see top the donation tally. And cash donations to charity made before the end of the year are tax-deductible for 2011 returns. Certain IRA withdrawals sent straight to nonprofits won't be counted as taxable income either. Catholic Charities Atlanta offers that financial suggestion as well as a video about their annual Christmas Appeal. Or, burn off holiday calories in the new year with Trees Atlanta. The first volunteer tree-planting…
