Midtown area students went back to school on August 6th, which means it’s time for an abundance of expensive school supplies, backpacks full of complicated text books and dreaded questions about math homework. With back-to-school stresses piling up, Laura Overdeck wants to let children and parents in on a little secret: math can be fun. Really. Overdeck is on a mission to change the way Americans think about math — especially given that math anxiety has been tracked in kids as young as age 5. This is what inspired her to create Bedtime Math, a nonprofit that sends out a daily email with a math problem tailored to “wee ones,” little and big kids. Overdeck is a Westfield native who now lives in Short Hills, NJ. She is an astrophysics …

By Emory Staff Emory University psychology professor Marshall Duke has helped ease the separation process for parents and their newly minted college students with a tremendously popular Emory orientation seminar on “Parenting a College Student: What To Expect.” Duke has delivered his tried-and-true advice to thousands of parents for more than 25 years. Below are Duke's directions on how navigate the complex changes in family dynamics: • Think about your parting words. "The closing words between parents and children are crucial. Whatever wisdom you have to offer, whether it is 'I love you,' 'I'm behind you,' 'I'm proud of you,' say it. If you can't express yourself verbally, write your thoughts down and mail the letter to your child …

Thousands of students awoke the Georgia Tech campus from its summer slumber Thursday as they arrived to start careers as Yellow Jackets. Thursday marked the first official open day of fall campus housing for freshmen, which meant students began converging on campus with parents, futons and minifridges in tow. Heavier traffic and congested paths and roadways will likely result and continue into Friday. Move-in activities will progress throughout the weekend, with upperclassmen and graduate students arriving Saturday and Sunday. _______ For Class of 2016, Service Starts Before Classes Prior to taking their first classes as Tech students, many members of the incoming freshman class will already have begun to live the Institute’s motto of “…

A peek at some Monday Midtown education news as APS students head back to school for the second week of the new year.
The first week of school was far from smooth for many Atlanta Public Schools parents and students. Some parents found themselves waiting in the rain for buses that never came. Others complained that buses picked them up, but took them to the wrong place. But Atlanta Public Schools administrators are working to fix the transportation mess. Officials said Sunday bus routes will be updated each week until all problems are solved. New bus routes will be posted on all school websites and e-mailed to school principals by 8 a.m. every Friday. These new routes will go into effect on the following Monday. Principals will also receive a copy of the updated passenger lists. An Atlanta Public Schools administrator will contact parents of special …

Any students who have not yet purchased school supplies will have a chance to get them without having to fork out for sales tax this weekend. After taking a two-year break because of the economy, the state of Georgia is offering a sales tax holiday on back-to-school goods Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10-11. But many schools in the local area already have resumed classes for the new school year, and most others are due to go back next week. Do you think the sales tax holiday is going to help many families with their back-to-school expenses, or should the state have offered the sales tax holiday a couple of weeks earlier? According to the Department of Revenue, sales tax will be suspended on general school supplies with a sales price of less …
The average American parent is expected to spend nearly $689 on back-to-school items. Will you spend that much?
Students in Decatur and Atlanta are back in class, and kids in DeKalb and Fulton public schools will be in their seats Monday. For many parents, these are days that include high-stakes trips to the store to help their children find the perfect backpack and school supplies. And let's not even talk about clothes. The National Retail Federation projects that parents of children in grades K-12 will spend nearly $689 on their children's back-to-school needs, almost $85 more than last year. All of this got us wondering about the school supply lists that parents are asked to fulfill. Most of the lists look pretty straight forward. But then there's the DeKalb County teacher, who will remain nameless, who went beyond listing No. 2 pencils and …

The 2012-13 APS school year begins Monday and Patch wants to see pictures as parents send their students off to school
It’s back to school today as the 2012-13 school year begins for most Atlanta Public Schools (APS) students on Monday, Aug. 6. Students attending year-round schools, such as Centennial Place Elementary, began on July 10. It could be a muggy and wet first day for students at Grady High, Inman Middle and Springdale Park Elementary school as there is a 60 percent chance of precipitation in the metro Atlanta area Monday. There’s much anew this year and you might want to look at the “I’m Going Back to School” video provided by the APS here. One change is the new Common Core of standardized academic standards for math, English and language arts that Georgia was one of 47 states to adopt. See the video for more info. Extensive transportation …
