State of the Grady Cluster: Lots accomplished, lots to do

Atlanta Public Schools' administrators and principals gave an overview and answered questions Thursday night at Grady High School concerning where local schools stand regarding a variety of education-related issues.

In the First Annual State of the Grady Cluster Presentation, held at Grady High School on Thursday, February 7, 2013, parents and interested community members learned there is much to celebrate in the Grady Cluster of Atlanta Public Schools (APS).  The Grady Cluster includes Grady High School, Inman Middle School, and the five “feeder” elementary schools: Centennial Place, Hope-Hill, Mary Lin, Morningside and Springdale Park. No. 1 on my celebration list, as a Grady parent, is the chart of SAT scores shared by Grady Principal Dr. Vincent Murray, indicating an overall increase in 2012 SAT scores, with Grady High School 2012 seniors scoring higher than the national average. After several turbulent years, “moving beyond scandal” and …

School Is Back In Session

The 2012-13 APS school year begins Monday and Patch wants to see pictures as parents send their students off to school

It’s back to school today as the 2012-13 school year begins for most Atlanta Public Schools (APS) students on Monday, Aug. 6. Students attending year-round schools, such as Centennial Place Elementary, began on July 10. It could be a muggy and wet first day for students at Grady High, Inman Middle and Springdale Park Elementary school as there is a 60 percent chance of precipitation in the metro Atlanta area Monday. There’s much anew this year and you might want to look at the “I’m Going Back to School” video provided by the APS here. One change is the new Common Core of standardized academic standards for math, English and language arts that Georgia was one of 47 states to adopt. See the video for more info.  Extensive transportation …

Portable Classrooms Coming to Inman Middle

Final proposal will be presented to the board of education on Tuesday

A grade six academy at Cook Elementary School is off the table — for now. In his final proposal, Superintendent Erroll B. Davis said portable classrooms will be installed at Inman Middle School for the 2012-2013 school year to addresses capacity issues. He said this will give “time to plan for any needed transitions,” which parents from the Inman cluster have actively advocated for. But the sixth grade academy for Inman Middle that was proposed to be built at Cook Elementary on Memorial Drive is still on the table for the future. “Inman has the former Cook facility available to use as a sixth grade academy while the enrollment numbers are assessed and a long-term solution is developed and implemented,” Davis wrote in his final proposal. …

It's nice to see some sense for a change and not building another school when it's not needed. The trailers should work fine for now or a move to Cook for the 6th grade academy in the near future. APS just can't afford to waste money on building a new middle school when they were options on the table. This is a good move that helps the problem now.   more ›

Call to 'STAND UP' for Grady Cluster

Parents for seven Grady cluster schools call for neighborhood togetherness during the final weeks of the APS redistricting process, including at this week's SRT-3 community meeting.

The following letter was posted on an APS redistricting parent-run message board on Sunday, March 18. An open letter to our friends and neighbors at Centennial Place Elementary, Hope-Hill Elementary, Mary Lin Elementary, Morningside Elementary, Springdale Park Elementary, Inman Middle and Grady High Schools. Dear Grady Cluster parents, We are running out of time to unite our voices and impress upon Superintendent Erroll Davis and the Board of Education the highest priorities that many of us within the newly formed Grady Cluster share. We are strongest together and we need strength and unity NOW to keep our voices ringing in the ears of the Superintendent and Board Members as they debate the final recommendations for the redistricting of …

Can any of the signatories please explain the rationale for diverting tens of millions of dollars in funds that could improve educational outcomes for ALL of Atlanta's public school students in order to fund fiscally irresponsible new construction for only a few when immediately available capacity for 600 to 800 is only a few miles distant? We get that you have some weird irrationality about …   more ›

Home Park Community Improvement Association: Keep Centennial-Inman-Grady

While group acknowledges that neighborhood is low on school-age children, it explains to residents that current APS redistricting process "will definitely affect your property values."

In a recent email letter, Kathy Boehmer of the Home Park Community Improvement Association (HPCIA), urged her neighbors to take the Atlanta Public Schools survey and explained why the association does not favor either of the current redistricting options that have been presented following the demographic survey. The HPCIA also wants to keep Centennial Place Elementary School K-5.  The letter reads as follows: Dear Home Park Neighbors, Home Park needs your help! This issue takes 5 minutes of your time and affects our property values; and the quality and social fabric of our neighborhood. Please complete the survey link and tell Atlanta Public Schools (APS) that Home Park wants to stay "Centennial-Inman-Grady." Include comments that will …
