Midtown's Colony Square raised more than $2,000 for Bert’s Big Adventure during its third-annual Trim a Tree for Charity Celebration last week. Once a year, Bert’s Big Adventure provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. The celebration marked the close of a two-week contest, in which 15 tenants of Colony Square decorated 18 trees. Participants were encouraged to get creative with their trees, and many sported a Disney theme to correlate with the concept of Bert’s Big Adventure. People were invited to vote for their favorite tree, with a $1 donation requested for each vote and no limit to the number of times a person could vote. The trees…

Staff Report Colony Square's third annual Trim-a-Tree for Charity Contest kicked off this past Monday and will benefit Bert’s Big Adventure, a nonprofit started in 2002 by local radio personality, Bert Weiss, and his wife Stacey. Once a year, Bert’s Big Adventure provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. Fifteen companies in Colony Square have decorated 18 trees for the team-building competition. Participants were encouraged to get creative with their trees, and many will have a Disney theme to correlate with the concept of Bert’s Big Adventure. Colony Square in Midtown is in the midst of hosting a series of eco-inspired events during World Green Building Week (WGBW), which began Monday and continues through Friday. Each event has been designed to spotlight the green initiatives of both Tishman Speyer, the property management company that runs the multi-use complex, and the building’s retail and office tenants. At the same time, the WGBW events will educate the community about small, sustainable practices that make a big difference The week’s events will include a community farmer’s market, an after-work cocktail party and an “Eco-lounge” experience. Midtown’s Colony Square will be the site of Friday’s 10th Anniversary 'Stand for Peace' vigil that is expected to feature appearances from U.S. Congressman John Lewis, Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, and Mrs. Evelyn Lowery. The vigil, which will include a wide array of community members with signs, banners and bullhorns in hand, is hosted by Georgia Women's Action for New Direction (WAND) and will be opposing the United States’ war with Afghanistan and occupations abroad.
