Yumbii to Launch Shipping Container Restaurant Concept in Midtown

Restaurant to be at 10th and Peachtree streets.

Yumbii, which sparked metro Atlanta's food truck craze, is going green with its latest concept: recycled shipping container restaurants. The company plans to open its first such eatery at 10th and Peachtree streets, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Yumbii told the Business Chronicle it sees the concept expanding across the city in small or odd-shaped lots. The idea melds well with the green movement mantra of reusing materials and making use of odd-shaped lots that otherwise might remain empty. It already has already taken root in international hotspots including Paris, London and New York. In Atlanta, Yumbii envisions seeing the idea as a “natural fit” for the Atlanta BeltLine, the Business Chronicle reported, because they're …

Report: Police Raid Area Food Trucks

Five trucks were issued citations Wednesday in Virginia Highland.

Atlanta Police raided the food truck event in Virginia-Highland on Wednesday and issued citations for improper permits. Five trucks were cited, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Each truck must have a license for each specific address they operate from. “It is not a health or safety issue," event organizer Bettie Cagle told the AJC. "These guys are fully permitted and follow all of the health regulation codes. But when you are at an event and the police come and shut it down, there is a lot of speculation, which makes me nervous for the trucks.” Read more on the AJC food blog. Food trucks are just about an every day part of the eating scene in Midtown and along the westside of town. The Atlanta Food Truck Park & Market opened …

Food Trucks Celebrate Councilman's Efforts

Street food vendors thank Kwanza Hall at weekly event in Midtown.

Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall sure was popular in Midtown on Thursday. At the weekly Street Food Thursdays event (which operated Sept. 8 from a new location at Peachtree and 12th streets), food truck vendors thanked the councilman with hugs and handshakes, exclaiming their graditude in person and on menu boards. This week, City Council approved legislation that simplifies food truck vending on private property. Hall wrote the ordinance to aid the street food movement that continues to gain strength intown. One vendor, Wow Food Truck, even created "The Kwanza Bowl" in honor of the councilman's work. "I got my own bowl," Hall said with a smile Thursday. "I feel special. I've never had my own dish."
