The Campus Safety Task Force, recently created by Atlanta City Council President Ceasar C. Mitchell, released its recommendations Monday on ways to prevent crime on and around area college and university campuses. The task force comprised of campus representatives from metro Atlanta colleges and universities. Over the past month, the group has met to discuss safety concerns, best practices for campus safety, and solutions to ensure the safety of all college students living on and near college campuses. The goal is to increase contact with citizens and reduce crime, with a particular focus on robberies, burglaries, auto thefts and larcenies from vehicles.
The Atlanta Police Department (APD) has selected four key areas in the city, including the Peachtree Street corridor in Midtown, for a strategic, 60-day crime suppression detail that began Thursday, Aug. 2 and is made possible with federal Justice Assistance Grant money. A portion of the $500,000 received through the grant will go towards officer overtime, allowing the Department to increase its resources and personnel in the evenings and overnights, from Aug. 2-Oct. 1. The following areas were carefully selected based on statistical analysis of recent crime trends: Citizens can expect to see an increased officer presence in those areas, including units on bicycles and motorcycles, on foot and in patrol cars. Update: Aug. 2, 2012 According to a Thursday afternoon story from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, rape charges against Conor Pollock, have been dropped. The former Georgia Tech assistant men’s tennis coach was charged with rape and possession of cocaine and marijuana in late March and resigned on April 4. ATLANTA, GA -- According to the Atlanta police, an apologetic armed robber victimized a female construction worker early Wednesday morning in yet another crime on or near the Georgia Tech campus. The woman reported that she was walking along Williams and 8th streets on her way to the Georgia Tech basketball coliseum construction site when she was approached from behind by a male. After taking her cell phone and $60 in cash, the suspect gave her “three hugs” and “continued to apologize” before fleeing on foot. Community leaders gather to pledge support for student safety; unveil high-tech police cruiser to be used jointly by Atlanta and Georgia Tech police departments
The Atlanta Police Department and Georgia Tech announced Monday a unique corporate and community partnership resulting in the unveiling of a car that is conducting joint patrols of the campus, as well as surrounding neighborhoods and commercial districts. The press conference at Tenth Street Underwood Memorial United Methodist Church in Home Park was even attended by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who along with APD Chief George Turner and Georgia Tech President G.P. Current law says they can't, but increased crime on and near Tech campus has proponents saying they should be allowed to arm themselves on campus.
After releasing information last week on a suspect possibly involved in recent armed robberies of Georgia Tech students, the Atlanta Police Department will hold a joint press conference with the school Monday afternoon to announce a new tool in its effort to combat crime on and near the campus. Midtown Alliance will also be involved in the partnership as officials from Atlantic Station owner and manager North American Properties and the Home Park neighborhood are also expected to be on hand today. Victim awakened early Sunday morning to find two suspects tampering with his laptop
A little more than a week after three Georgia Tech students were the victims of armed robberies in separate off-campus incidents, a Tech student was awakened in his on-campus room early Sunday morning and robbed at gunpoint. According to Georgia Tech Police, a male student was awakened around 1 a.m. in the North Avenue Apartments East to find two unknown male suspects tampering with his laptop. When he asked the suspects what they were doing, one of them pointed a handgun at the student. The suspects stole the victim's laptop and cell phone and were last seen running through the courtyard towards North Avenue. Armed man bangs on front door while saying, "Police, let me in."
A man impersonating a police officer attempted to force his way into a Home Park neighborhood residence this week. According to Atlanta Police spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport, the failed home invasion attempt happened about 2 a.m. Wednesday on Hampton Street. A female Georgia Tech student told police that a black male wearing a black shirt with “Police” on the front of it began pounding on the front door. According to Davenport, the suspect said, “Police, let me in.” The woman opened the door and “observed the person with a firearm in hand and point it at her as he attempted to make his way inside the residence,” said Davenport. Victims robbed of their phones and Macbooks as they left the campus library.
Armed gunmen robbed a pair of Georgia Tech students early Thursday morning as they left the campus library. According to the Georgia Tech police report, at around 2:45 a.m., a white van approached the students as they were attempting to enter their vehicle that was parked near the intersection of Bobby Dodd Way and Fowler Street. Two men emerged from the van, whereupon one suspect pulled a gun and reportedly told the students to drop their backbacks. The suspects then took from the students their cell phones and backpacks, which each contained a Macbook laptop valued between $1,500 and $2,000 according to the campus police incident report.
