The study commission by the Virginia-Highland Civic Association found that of the three sites it reviewed, a site in the Old Fourth Ward would be the most suitable for a Middle School Academy.
An analysis of three possible sites for a new Middle School Academy found that the former David T. Howard High School in the Old Fourth Ward "is the best-suited location of the three in terms of its ability to absorb the proposed Middle School Academy use without causing the quality of life of the adjacent community to erode." The study was commissioned by the Virginia-Highland Civic Association as part of the community's effort to take an active part in Atlanta Public Schools' discussions about how to relieve crowding at Inman Middle School. As the nine-page report states, "this analysis has been limited to a review of the three sites provided through the most recent work of the Inman Capacity Task Force." The three sites include Inman …

Atlanta Public Schools' administrators and principals gave an overview and answered questions Thursday night at Grady High School concerning where local schools stand regarding a variety of education-related issues.
In the First Annual State of the Grady Cluster Presentation, held at Grady High School on Thursday, February 7, 2013, parents and interested community members learned there is much to celebrate in the Grady Cluster of Atlanta Public Schools (APS). The Grady Cluster includes Grady High School, Inman Middle School, and the five “feeder” elementary schools: Centennial Place, Hope-Hill, Mary Lin, Morningside and Springdale Park. No. 1 on my celebration list, as a Grady parent, is the chart of SAT scores shared by Grady Principal Dr. Vincent Murray, indicating an overall increase in 2012 SAT scores, with Grady High School 2012 seniors scoring higher than the national average. After several turbulent years, “moving beyond scandal” and …

The CINS position statement says a 6th grade annex is 'less disruptive' than an 8th grade annex.
The Council of Intown Neighborhoods and Schools has released a position statement on the issue of how to ease crowding at Inman Middle School. The statement urges the Atlanta Public Schools to keep Grady High School's current 9-12 grade configuration as it reviews options for the Inman-Grady school cluster. The statement, which was adopted unanimously by the CINS board on Thursday, also states that the creation of a 6th grade annex would help create "fewer negative educational, social, and extracurricular disruptions to a middle school aged-adolescent than an 8th grade annex." One proposal that has been floated is the idea of creating an academy for 6th or 8th graders, possibly in a former school buidling in the Old Fourth Ward. The full …

Perhaps having disciplinary action on record for a high number of students from a specific socio-economic background would make them look like they're doing a poor job of educating that demographic, and that's just too high of a political price for APS. There's also a tendency to …   more ›
