Holiday Volunteers Needed at Open Hand

Metro area family of three has volunteered more than 1,000 hours during the last year for the Atlanta nonprofit that delivers more than 5,500 meals daily to those challenged by or looking to prevent chronic disease or disability.

During this Thanksgiving and holiday season, what do you count among your blessings? For Open Hand volunteer, Scott Smith, he's thankful for the physical and mental abilities to be able to serve others. The Marietta resident and Georgia Tech graduate works 50-plus hours a week as a financial planner for Morgan Stanley, but also finds time to carve out a few hours every Thursday morning to deliver meals for those in need. The Atlanta nonprofit Open Hand, located at 176 Ottley Drive on the cusp of Midtown and Buckhead, is the largest provider of home-delivered, medically appropriate meals and nutrition education in the U.S., delivering more than 5,500 meals daily to those challenged by or looking to prevent chronic disease or disability. “I …

Midtown's Wheelchair Warrior

Paralyzed from the chest down, Karen DeVault's goal is to earn a doctorate and become a “rhythmic force for disability advocacy.”

Her eyes shine bright and her smile is radiant. Who would have guessed that at the tender age of 27, this lively woman, Karen DeVault, would be unstoppable? Life has had its ups and downs for DeVault, but she stays positive. She is sweet, funny, charismatic and she can start a conversation with just about anyone. Originally from the Gulf Coast of Florida, she is popular here in Midtown. Everywhere she goes, people stop to say hello or simply send a quick wave and smile her way. DeVault moved to Atlanta about six years ago to “maximize my independence and to satisfy that little voice in my heart that says ‘more,’” she says. Living in the city makes it easier for her to get around. DeVault is a Cervical 5/6 Quadriplegic due to a diving …

Sweating it out for Piedmont Park

In barely two years, Boot Camp 4a Cause has donated more than $50K to the Piedmont Park Conservancy and other local charities.

Fitness trainers have been conducting early morning boot camps to improve strength, cardio, balance, flexibility and more in Piedmont Park for many years. But two years ago, a trio of volunteer trainers decided it was time to give Atlanta’s favorite green gathering space a big thank you. In March 2010, trainers Andy Abend, Lauren Mross and Andrew Whitney got together to form Boot Camp 4a Cause, a program that donates 100 percent of its proceeds to local charities such as the Piedmont Park Conservancy. They do take some money out to cover expenses such as the cost for permits and insurance, but everything else goes to charity. Of the $52,000 donated by Boot Camp 4a Cause, $27,000 has gone to the Conservancy. “We thought, ‘here we are…

Students Tour BeltLine with Angel

Midtown resident and active volunteer Angel Poventud walks BeltLine with Ga. Tech architecture students so they can ponder its development.

The sky was clear and blue last Saturday when Midtown resident Angel Poventud led nearly 120 Georgia Tech students along seven miles of the BeltLine trail.  The part-time CSX train conductor and active community volunteer said it was the "largest walk" he has given. Poventud in December was named "Atlanta's 2010 Cox Conserves Hero" by The Trust for Public Land and WSB-TV. His goodwill activities include leading BeltLine tours, planting trees with Trees Atlanta and serving on the board of directors for nonprofit arts organization WonderRoot. "We all need to work together," Poventud said, to develop the BeltLine, a project that will and has created parks, trails, transit and new development along a 22-mile loop of historic rail lines.  Last …
