How many times have you driven past the mammoth building that sits between Ponce de Leon Avenue and North Avenue in Midtown across the street from the Krispy Kreme and wondered just what goes on in there? Some know that the Ponce de Leon Center is one of the largest, most comprehensive facilities dedicated to the treatment of advanced HIV/AIDS in the United States. Some know that the Ponce de Leon Center, which was founded in 1986, serves about 5,000 patients each year. World AIDS Day is held on December 1st each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988. In observance of World AIDS Day, Mayor Kasim Reed and the City of Atlanta has partnered with (RED)™ to illuminate City Hall red throughout he month of December. Positive Impact plans move to 11th Street in October to serve its growing need.
Positive Impact, a nonprofit organization that offers mental health and other services to those affected by HIV/AIDS, soon will serve more people. On Oct. 3, Positive Impact plans to open a new office in Midtown. The organization is relocating to 60 11th Street, between Peachtree and West Peachtree streets. "This will be a great opportunity for us and for the community to be involved in our work," Michael Baker, director of advancement, said in an email. Positive Impact was founded in 1993 and has been in its current location on Ralph McGill Boulevard since 2003. Its a cool building but it would be nice if it was complemented with some land and streetscaping. The lack of care for the grounds makes it appear abandoned or closed.   more ›
