Home Park Community Improvement Association frustrated with Georgia Power as it builds its Midtown substation, set to be completed in June, at the corner of Atlantic Drive and 14th Street.
Construction continued this past week on the Georgia Power substation in the Home Park neighborhood as installation began of the gigantic overhead-to-underground termination poles. The Atlantic Drive substation, which is being constructed on a 1.5-acre site at the corner of 14th Street and Atlantic Drive, has been a contentious issue to some residents in the Home Park community since the idea was introduced in late 2008. As development in the area, including around the nearby Atlantic Station mixed-use development, continues to grow and expand, the demand for electricity in the area will soon exceed Georgia Power’s capabilities to supply electric service from existing substations and distribution lines. While some residents are not …

Atlanta Police Department commander for the zone that covers many Midtown Patch neighborhoods says calling 9-1-1 is the only way department can keep a good record of where the issues are so that they can deploy resources to the areas that need it most.
Update - 1/29/13: Additional crime stats for 2012 and comments from Zone 5 Commander Major Wayne Whitmire have been added to the article. Original story: This month, the Atlanta Police Department said that crime stats for 2012 showed that across the city of Atlanta, overall crime was down 5 percent from 2011. Atlanta suffered its second fewest homicides (85) in 50 years while other violent crimes dropped last year including rape (down 24 percent), aggravated assault (down 2 percent), and robbery (down 1 percent). But property theft experienced a slight increase and as some residents of Atlanta Police Department’s Zone 5 know, the miniscule dropping of aggravated assault and robbery crimes has barely been felt in the immediate area. Zone 5…

After releasing information last week on a suspect possibly involved in recent armed robberies of Georgia Tech students, the Atlanta Police Department will hold a joint press conference with the school Monday afternoon to announce a new tool in its effort to combat crime on and near the campus. Midtown Alliance will also be involved in the partnership as officials from Atlantic Station owner and manager North American Properties and the Home Park neighborhood are also expected to be on hand today. Armed man bangs on front door while saying, "Police, let me in."
A man impersonating a police officer attempted to force his way into a Home Park neighborhood residence this week. According to Atlanta Police spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport, the failed home invasion attempt happened about 2 a.m. Wednesday on Hampton Street. A female Georgia Tech student told police that a black male wearing a black shirt with “Police” on the front of it began pounding on the front door. According to Davenport, the suspect said, “Police, let me in.” The woman opened the door and “observed the person with a firearm in hand and point it at her as he attempted to make his way inside the residence,” said Davenport. The resident forced the door closed and locked it as she heard the suspect say, “Go check the back.” The suspect…

The HPCIA also wants to keep Centennial Place Elementary School K-5. The letter reads as follows: Dear Home Park Neighbors, Home Park needs your help! This issue takes 5 minutes of your time and affects our property values; and the quality and social fabric of our neighborhood. Please complete the survey link and tell Atlanta Public Schools (APS) that Home Park wants to stay "Centennial-Inman-Grady." Include comments that will …
