Volunteers Needed for Atlanta's Homeless Registry

The goal is to create a by-name registry of the city's homeless, enabling organizers to prioritize those most vulnerable and at risk of dying on the street so their needs can be met.

The City of Atlanta is seeking hundreds of volunteers to participate in the Atlanta Homeless Registry – a large-scale effort to survey people sleeping in unsheltered locations and emergency shelters. The goal of the Atlanta Homeless Registry is to create a by-name registry of the city's homeless, enabling organizers to prioritize those most vulnerable and those at risk of dying on the street so that they can be connected with housing and services that meet their needs. I went out on the street in Midtown Christmas morning. I saw people sleeping in doorways and walking up and down the street at 7am. I don't know why so many homeless people end up downtown. I do know that my home State would not allow anyone to stay on the streets during the winter; period. Nonprofit Spotlight: Atlanta Mission

Atlanta Mission, which assists more than 1,000 homeless men, women and children daily, operates four facilities in metro Atlanta and Northeast Georgia including the westside’s My Sister’s House on Howell Mill Road.

The city's largest and longest-running provider of homeless services, Atlanta Mission “transforms, through Christ, the lives of those facing homelessness.” Established in 1938, Atlanta Mission provides overnight shelter, temporary shelter, employment support, recovery programming and transitional housing for more than 1,000 homeless men, women and children daily. Its stated goal is to understand what brought each person to one of its four facilities so it can help find the appropriate next step towards healthy independence.
