Midtown Flashback: The Crazy Moon Fun at Loca Luna

While the dilapidated former Loca Luna building along 6th Street is currently being demolished, let your mind wander back a decade or so when the Latin-inspired Midtown restaurant was among Atlanta's most popular nighttime spots.

There was a time not long ago that when the moon rose, crazy good times ensued at Loca Luna’s original Midtown location at 836 Juniper Street. The moon set several years on the Loca Luna party and the building that once housed one of Atlanta’s earliest tapas restaurants is almost a memory. An Atlanta favorite, Loca Luna was forced closed on Juniper in 2006 and moved to the Amsterdam Walk district as Novare Group moved in to erect its nearby condo tower, Viewpoint. Now the dilapidated former Loca Luna building along 6th Street between Peachtree and Juniper streets is currently in the process of being demolished to make way for another Novare and Batson-Cook Development Company project, a 23-story 320-unit luxury apartment tower known as 100…

Residents Report Gunshots at Loca Luna

Residents continue to voice concerns about safety, noise

Resident Michael Brady thought he heard fireworks last Saturday outside his home near Amsterdam Walk. The six loud shots turned out to be gunfire outside by Loca Luna, a busy nightclub on Amsterdam Walk, 550 Amsterdam Ave. Residents who live near Loca Luna have complained for months about loud noise and safety concerns surrounding late-night parties, especially on the weekends. Brady and others say cars block driveways and fire hydrants, and police officers and private security do little to stop the problem. “A shooting today is going to result in a death tomorrow,” Brady told Patch. “Loca Luna needs to be shut down.” Residents say fights at the club are becoming more common and a brawl that included about 20 people broke out Saturday …

Suavez you don't even seem to understand how offensive your language is. You are right since 99% was black the problems were almost certainly caused by some people who were black. But the way you write you are saying all black people who are unfortunate enough to live in the ghetto, are troublemakers. There are plenty of hardworking and honest people living in the ghetto who have to work 2 and 3 …   more ›

Residents Blast Amsterdam Walk Clamor

Some dozen area residents came to a meeting to push one of Amsterdam Avenue's busiest tenants to do something about the traffic and rowdy concert-goers that are clogging their neighborhood.

Some dozen area residents met to complain to one of Amsterdam Avenue's busiest tenants about the traffic and rowdy concert-goers that accumulate in their neighborhood, especially on weekends. Loca Luna owner Eric Kline organized what he called in an e-mail a community meeting that "identifies constructive solutions for neighborhood concerns." The concerns of the neighbors who went to the Tuesday night meeting at Park Tavern are the quantity and behavior of Loca Luna patrons, where they leave their cars, and lack of city law enforcement. "I feel like I have no rights. Loca Luna apparently has all the rights," said Wendy White, who lives off Amsterdam Avenue. She took pictures of an ambulance blocked out of Amsterdam Avenue because cars were…

I'm so happy to see that this problem is being taken care of. I don't personally live on Amsterdam Walk but everytime I come down there I cringe at the thought of trying to get out of there. WHY don't the police officers write more tickets for those illegally parked???? It's like shooting fish in a barrel. I'd hate to imagine someone in dire need at the times of mass traffic gridlock here. If …   more ›

Visions for Vacancies: The former Loca Luna location

What do you want to see in this vacant space?

Welcome to the first edition of Midtown Patch's "Visions for Vacancies" feature. Each week, we'll share a picture and some information about a vacant commercial space in town and ask you what you'd like to see go in that space. Don’t concern yourself with things such as setback regulations and other zoning issues the city has to deal with. We want to know that if it were up to you, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? Our first stop is the former Loca Luna restaurant at 836 Juniper Street. This dilapidated building that occupies a stretch of 6th Street between Peachtree and Juniper streets has been empty for more than five years. It has been dead since 2006 when its owners, Novare Group, told the …
