APD searches Midtown's Bill Lowe Gallery

Investigators were following up on complaints from artists on how their work was being sold.

Investigators with the Atlanta Police Major Fraud Unit served a search warrant at Midtown’s Bill Lowe Gallery on Tuesday. Atlanta Police Officer John Chafee said the investigators were following up on complaints from artists on how their work was being sold. WSB-TV reported that investigators were seen removing computers, files and some pieces of work from the gallery that is located at 1555 Peachtree St. in north Midtown. The news outlet interviewed a New York City-based artist who said the gallery had neglected paying him thousands of dollars despite selling his works. No arrests have been made, nor charges filed in the open case according to the police. A message left by Patch with the gallery has not been returned. Bill Lowe sent WSB …

Rebounded Actor’s Express names new executive director

Facing financial crisis only last year, the King Plow Arts Center located theatre lives on now in its 25th season

Actor's Express announced Monday that Nan Barnett has accepted the position of executive director, effective immediately. Barnett is on duty and Interim Managing Producer Kate Warner will overlap with her for several weeks to insure a smooth transition. “I have known Nan Barnett for about five years through our mutual involvement in the National New Play Network,” said Artistic Director Freddie Ashley in a release. “She is fiercely smart -- and one of the great advocates for new plays in the American theatre. City Arts Funding Available

Project support is available for individual artists, arts organizations and community organizations planning to complete artistic works in the city the next 12 months.

The City of Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs invites nonprofit organizations and individual artists to apply to the 2012-2013 Contracts for Arts Services (CAS) program. The CAS program awards grants in the following areas of artistic and cultural services: production, creation, presentation, exhibition and managerial support. The application deadline for regular funding categories (Major Arts Organizations, Arts Organizations, Artist Projects and Emerging Artist Award) is Aug. 27, 2012. There are several opportunities to enjoy free cultural arts events in Midtown and West Midtown this week

Love a teacher? Hate a teacher? Know a teacher? Then you’re going to want to see the Essential Theatre’s world premier of “Evelyn in Purgatory” this week. And if you’re an educator, you can see it for free on Thursday, July 5 at West Midtown’s Actors Express, located at 887 W. Marietta St. Oh, and you can receive a complimentary glass of vino, too. MODA Fundraiser to Benefit Inner City Kids

Modern Class Design partners with Midtown's Museum of Design Atlanta for an art, fashion and design fundraiser to benefit inner city children and provide art camp attendance.

Modern Class Design (MCD), the interior design company founded by NFL star Vernon Davis and business partner Antone Davis, has partnered with the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) to host a fundraising event featuring art, fashion and design. Set to be held Saturday, June 9 at MODA, proceeds from the event will help fund the attendance of inner-city students at the art focused Camp MODA in 2012. A handful of designers from local colleges have been invited to attend and display their work for the opportunity to be selected and offered an internship MCD. Mayor Proposes Increase for Arts Grant Funding

Mayor Kasim Reed makes announcement in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Orly plane crash tragedy; proposal increases arts grant funding to $940,000

Mayor Kasim Reed has proposed to double arts grant funding for the Office of Cultural Affairs in the City of Atlanta’s FY 2013 operating budget. Mayor Reed announced his intention to ask the Atlanta City Council for more arts funding last week during his keynote speech at an Atlanta Rotary International luncheon. The Mayor’s speech followed a moving short film about the Atlanta arts leaders and patrons who lost their lives in a plane crash in France on June 3, 1962. The Atlanta Art Association had sponsored a month-long tour of European art with more than 100 of Atlanta's cultural and civic leaders. At the time, it was the world's worst air disaster involving a single aircraft. The Woodruff Arts Center will commemorate the Orly plane crash…

WonderRoot announces Walthall Artist Fellowship to support artists at pivotal stages in their careers; Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts receives grant

WonderRoot recently announced a brand new career development program for Atlanta area artists. Building on a model of learning and exchange which connects artists to mentors, peer artists, and leaders in the field, The Walthall Artist Fellowship is comprised of five components: a monthly symposium, peer learning and roundtable discussions, one-to-one artist mentorship, a five-day residency at Ossabaw Island and a group exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. Founded in 2004, WonderRoot is an Atlanta-based non-profit arts and service organization with a mission to unite artists and community to inspire positive social change.
