For several years, Grady High School has staged its graduation ceremonies in the Civic Center's 4,600-seat theater. Over the past two years, the Civic Center has been the location for 15 major productions including the pilot episode of The Walking Dead, Flight, Joyful Noise, The Three Stooges and Scary Movie Five. Freemantle Media’s Family Feud has produced 360…

Council Approves Smoking Ban in City Parks

A peek around at some Tuesday Midtown news to use to start the day

A ban on smoking in Atlanta’s parks took one more step in becoming reality Monday as the city council voted almost unanimously to make it illegal to puff on cigarettes, cigars or pipes in “city parks, athletic fields, aquatic areas, golf courses, tennis courses, hiking/walking/biking trails, playgrounds, off-leash areas, and spectator and concession areas.”  District 6 City Councilman Alex Wan represents the Piedmont Park area and told Patch recently, “We keep investing in our parks and more and more people – kids and families – are starting to use them,” Wan said. “Certainly I respect the decision of those who choose to smoke … but more people are using our parks and we want to promote healthy living there.” Mayor Kasim Reed supports the …

I applaud the city! Why should my time at the time be spoiled by second hand smoke. I go there to enjoy the fresh air and green space the city has so little of... and much prefer to do so without nasty smoke blowing my way or seeing cig butts everywhere. The festivals and concerts will be SO much more pleasant if they do actually enforce it. I say YAY Atlanta for having the balls to say no to …   more ›

Owen Wilson: Piedmont Park is 'fantastic'

Actor seeks out the Piedmont Park Conservancy's volunteer manager Tuesday to express how impressed he was during his initial visit to the park

As he does many days, Eli Dickerson was assisting volunteers at Piedmont Park on Tuesday. As Manager for Volunteer Services for the Piedmont Park Conservancy (PPC), Dickerson was putting away tools near Magnolia Hall when he was approached by a first-time visitor to the park. “He said he was a here a few years ago in Buckhead, but now he was in Midtown and getting a whole different view of the city,’’ Dickerson said. The ‘he’ turned out to be actor Owen Wison, who was biking along solo through the park before seeking out the PPC employee. Wilson, who has recently been spotted dining at Midtown’s Ecco, is in town filming “The Internship” with his buddy Vince Vaughn. Two years ago, Wilson was in Atlanta and the Buckhead area shooting “Hall …
