City Announces Members of the Working Group to Reduce Prostitution

Midtown Ponce Security Alliance president among those tasked with developing legislative recommendations to curb street-level prostitution

Recognizing the need for a holistic approach to combat street-level prostitution, the City of Atlanta has convened a Working Group to Reduce Prostitution to collaborate with key stakeholders and bring back recommendations to the Administration and City Council. The current “Stay Out of Areas of Prostitution” legislation will be held until the Working Group is ready to report back with new or amended legislation. The scope of the Working Group, which includes Midtown Ponce Security Alliance President Peggy Denby, will be focused on a proposal for curbing street-level prostitution. The proposal should give the Atlanta Police Department additional tools to fight prostitution, fairly and appropriately address the demand and the supply side of …

Peggy Peggy Peggy.. *eyeroll* Oh I'm sure she will come up with some solid solutions. Perhaps she can entice a few of the good ladies to come clean her condo, and get them off the streets. You know...REAL WORLD solutions! Like that, and things that don't involve locking people in pods, changing zoning codes or banishing, etc. Focus on the buyer and the seller will move on. Bust the pimps, not the…   more ›

Midtown No Cruising Signs Changing

"Secret Atlanta" website describes city street prostitution as being concentrated in Midtown among other areas.

Today’s Midtown Patch Picture of Day comes by way of the Atlanta City Council’s recent approval to extend Midtown’s no-cruising ordinance by three hours. The extension came about from a proposal by District 2 Councilman Kwanza Hall in an effort to help combat the persistent prostitution issue around residences and businesses in Midtown. The former no-cruising zone ordinance, which made it illegal to pass a control point more than twice within a two-hour period, extended from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. But as many Midtowners know, those early morning hours just before sunrise are very active for prostitution in the area. Under the new ordinance, the new no-cruising ordinance will be in effect until 7 a.m. It doesn’t take effect until the posted signs…

Primer on Cross-Dressing Prostitution in Midtown

The Midtown Ponce Security Alliance calls it "the most distinct pattern of blatant street criminal activity afflicting the neighborhood."

Editor's note: The following information was posted recently by the Midtown Ponce Security Alliance (MPSA). The MPSA has served the Midtown community since 2003 as a non-profit organization by coordinating neighborhood response to public safety and security issues in order to advance the Midtown way of life. The MPSA achieves this objective primarily by operating a neighborhood security patrol funded by its resident and business members, and community sponsors. See here for more information about becoming a member of the MPSA. There has been recent discussion on this site about whether to describe these prostitutes as ‘transvestites,” “transgender,” or something else. The MPSA recently provided its explanation of terminology, and further …

Midtown's No-Cruising Hours Extended

Ordinance extended by three hours until 7 a.m. New metals theft law expected to boost APD's crime-fighting efforts.

The Atlanta City Council recently approved extending Midtown’s no-cruising ordinance by three hours. Proposal extending 'No-Cruising' hours expected Monday

Councilman Kwanza Hall expected to make push for increased no-cruising zone hours in an attempt to fight persistent prostitution issue in Midtown.

The Atlanta City Council returns from recess Monday afternoon with District 2 Councilman Kwanza Hall set to propose extending the conclusion of Midtown's no-cruising zone ordinance an additional three hours from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. Hall said he is doing so to extend the reach local law enforcement officials have in their efforts to combat the persistent prostitution issue around residences and businesses in Midtown. Midtown has been plagued with pockets of prostitution for decades. There are times when the Atlanta Police Vice Unit teams with APD Zone 5 officers to produce successful undercover prostitution stings, such as the one late last month that resulted in 35 arrests. But the lack of resources makes such stings too infrequent, and an …

Can SOAP help clean up Midtown's prostitution?

Weekend undercover sting nets 35 arrests; police and city officials look to establish anti-prostitution areas in Midtown.

As they periodically do, the Atlanta Police Vice Unit teamed with Zone 5 officers last weekend to perform an undercover prostitution sting in and around Midtown and downtown Atlanta. Midtown Patch rode along and witnessed some of the 35 arrests of mostly male and female prostitutes over a two-day period. Midtown has been plagued with pockets of prostitution for decades and warmer weather only brings more streetwalkers to the area each spring and summer. The charges were city ordinance violations for solicitations of illicit sex acts. If found guilty, the first offense brings 15 days jail time, the second offense is 60 days, and the third offense is 180 days. But as those who live and work and play in Midtown know all too well, these …

Can Midtown Rid Itself Of Prostitution?

Or maybe, prostitution will be with Midtown forever.

On and off for more than three decades, prostitution has been an illegal activity that Midtown has struggled to break free of. You can find it in the early morning hours in the area roughly bound by Peachtree Street, Myrtle St., 5th St., and Ponce de Leon Ave. Many of the prostitutes in this area are transgender people offering sex for $20 to $40. Many of the women prostitutes along Ponce, which has a long history of prostitution, are what police describe as “messy,” and are repeat offenders and heavy drug users. But most of the Midtown prostitutes are men, including young gay ones who walk up and down Cypress Street seeking customers, sometimes approaching unexpected people exiting from nearby restaurants The johns who pick up the …

The prostitution problem is the symptom of prostitution prohibition. Prostitutes and clients have nowhere to go to do their trade. The criminal justice system cannot keep them in jail. The economy and workforce do not accept many prostitutes because of drug habits or lack of job skills. Our government cannot keep handing out welfare. If our government gives live able wage welfare to able body …   more ›
