The Georgia Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) formed a partnership Wednesday to promote and encourage collaboration in space science and technology between the two institutions. Georgia Tech President G.P. "Bud" Peterson and JPL Director Charles Elachi signed a memorandum of understanding that outlines how the two organizations will work together to identify and enhance research and educational opportunities in space systems and instrument definition and design. The agreement also promotes personnel exchanges between Georgia Tech and JPL to encourage participation of students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty in JPL research, as well as involve JPL engineers in research and…

What do you recall about the day that man first walked on the moon?
His family called him "a reluctant American hero" who was just doing his job. But Neil A. Armstrong, who died Saturday of complications from heart bypass surgery, was a hero. He was just shy of his 39th birthday when he lumbered down the ladder from the Apollo 11 spacecraft and stepped onto the stark lunar landscape on July 20, 1969. "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," he said, as Americans around the country watched in awe at the live footage from dark space, so far away. That step fulfilled a challenge President John F. Kennedy issued in the early 1960s —to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Armstrong began his career as a Navy fighter pilot and test pilot before being tapped for a highly …

This week on the Georgia Tech campus, Dr. Charles Elachi will discuss the challenges of robotic space and Earth exploration, highlights of Curiosity’s recent landing on Mars, and present some of the engineering and technological challenges for future missions of exploration and discovery. Dr. Elachi has served as the Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory since 2001 and is also vice president of the California Institute of Technology. Georgia Tech's contribution to America's exploration of space has been vast, including 14 of the school's graduates who became space shuttle astronauts. No doubt the school has helped America be a leader in space exploration, but many say recent budget cuts to the program could change that. Nobody can …
