"They laid down their lives for the love of their children and that was right in the midst of a very wrong event.” - Retired teacher Dr. Mary K. Widener about the Sandy Hook Elementary School workers who died during this month's tragedy.
On Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, Midtown’s Peachtree Christian Church held a special Service of Prayer and Remembrance for Newtown, Conn., that began with bells tolling in tribute for the victims of the Dec. 14 tragedy. The turnout in the church sanctuary was sparse with about 25 people attending the noon service on one of the final shopping days remaining before Christmas. But the words were powerful as Peachtree Christian Church (PPC) Senior Minister Dr. Barry McCarty guided the 40-minute service that featured musical interludes from PPC organist Brad A. Hughley. Said McCarty, “Father, we think about moms and dads and we think about kids. We think about all those touched by the events of last Friday and we pray for all the families of Newtown, …

Did you tell your children? Do you have advice to share with other parents on how to approach this delicate conversation?
Patch reported Wednesday that Peachtree Christian Church in north Midtown will be holding a special Service of Prayer and Remembrance for Newtown, Connecticut on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. Which leads us to another question of day concerning the events of the morning of Dec. 14 that came as a shock to all parents. We watched news of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut with tears in our eyes and a lump in our throats. While the rest of us went about our mornings last Friday, 26 innocent lives were lost at a suburban school much like the ones where we send our own children. Many questions were raised throughout that day and over the weekend, not the least of which was: "How do we explain this to our children?" Counselors, …
The national group of mayors, including a dozen from Georgia, sent a letter to President Obama Wednesday outlining the need to change gun legislation in the United States.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed joined more than 750 mayors across the country Wednesday in sending a letter to President Barack Obama in response to the shooting in Newtown, Conn., and the need to change gun legislation in the United States. Reed was among a dozen state mayors to join the coalition Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The group is led by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. The letter read, in part, "As mayors, we are charged with keeping our communities safe. But too many of us have sat with mothers and fathers of children killed with guns. Twenty-four children enrolled in public schools in your hometown of Chicago were shot to death just last year. At the moving memorial service on Sunday evening, …
Patch Question of the Week: After Newtown, do you feel safe sending your kids to school?
It's the issue that's on many people's minds: could the horror that visited Newtown last week happen here? Are our schools safe from such violence? And what can we do - if anything at all - to make them safer? Metro Atlanta schools rushed to reassure parents that their systems are prepared in the event of an emergency. APS Superintendent Dr. Erroll Davis said city of Atlanta schools have implemented safety drills and other procedures that are designed to protect their students. Nonetheless, he asked parents to always remain vigilant and alert school officials if they see something suspicious. DeKalb County schools also have a system in place for notifying parents, locking down schools and having law enforcement and school officials on …

#Seth, The incident on Ponce and Moreland was solved and someone named Shaheed, age 30, is in jail. It was probably over drugs. They are trying to crack down on pan-handlers but it's an ongoing effort considering they don't usually lock them up. I think they're given a ticket or a summons. Not sure. http://atlantadailyworld.com/index.php/adw-news/1697-police-arrest-suspect-in-daylight-ponce-de-…   more ›
