Holiday Volunteers Needed at Open Hand

Metro area family of three has volunteered more than 1,000 hours during the last year for the Atlanta nonprofit that delivers more than 5,500 meals daily to those challenged by or looking to prevent chronic disease or disability.

During this Thanksgiving and holiday season, what do you count among your blessings? For Open Hand volunteer, Scott Smith, he's thankful for the physical and mental abilities to be able to serve others. The Marietta resident and Georgia Tech graduate works 50-plus hours a week as a financial planner for Morgan Stanley, but also finds time to carve out a few hours every Thursday morning to deliver meals for those in need. The Atlanta nonprofit Open Hand, located at 176 Ottley Drive on the cusp of Midtown and Buckhead, is the largest provider of home-delivered, medically appropriate meals and nutrition education in the U.S., delivering more than 5,500 meals daily to those challenged by or looking to prevent chronic disease or disability. “I …

Midtown Patch Gives 5 to Open Hand

Open Hand is the largest provider of home-delivered, medically appropriate meals and nutrition education in the U.S., delivering more than 5,500 meals daily to those challenged by or looking to prevent chronic disease or disability.

We do it as part of our coverage — in a dedicated space that lets local charities and volunteers find each other — and with “Give 5,” through which we donate free advertising space to charitable organizations and contribute our own time as volunteers. Many Midtown residents give back year round. How do you give back to the Midtown …

Open Hand Reaches Capital Campaign Goal to Expand Facility

The 17,000-square-foot facility expansion begins Tuesday and will nearly triple the size of Open Hand’s current facility on Ottley Drive.

Atlanta nonprofit Open Hand, the nation’s largest community-based provider of home-delivered meals, will dig into a 17,000-square-foot facility expansion with a celebratory ceremony on Tuesday morning. The expansion was essential and will nearly triple the size of Open Hand’s current facility; addressing the organization’s critical need for a larger, more efficient facility to increase meal production. Open Hand provides more than 5,000 meals and nutrition education to clients across Metro Atlanta every day and recently delivered its 20 millionth meal.  The expansion, which comes on the heels of the nonprofit’s successful Capital Expansion Campaign that raised $4.2 million as a result of donations from philanthropic foundations, corporate …
