Expecting Holiday Package Deliveries? So Are Thieves

Steps you can take to decrease your chances of being a victim.

While you're away at the malls doing some window shopping for the holidays, bear in mind that thieves are, too. Drive around Midtown and several other Midtown Patch neighborhoods and you'll see amazing displays of holiday decorations. But having those Christmas trees and scores of gifts tucked underneath in full public view 24-7 is not a good idea. "If I can see it, so can the criminals," said Atlanta Police Department Lt. Marshall Roberson, who spoke recently at the Neighborhood Planning Unit-W meeting. "You've got to think about this stuff. Use a little common sense; don't have everything visible to the street from your window." His comments come as there has been a slight uptick in burglaries in some neighborhoods. Grant Park for …

Don't Trick or Treat at These Midtown Homes

To help you keep your family protected, here's a map of registered sex offenders in Midtown Patch

After talking to our children all year about being safe and not talking to strangers, there's one day each year we send them out onto the streets and tell them to knock on strangers' doors. Halloween is upon us, and Patch wants to help everyone stay safe. So we've created this map of registered sex offenders in Midtown Patch, so you can choose whose door to knock on and whose not to — especially if your family is trick-or-treating in a new neighborhood, with friends or at Grandma's. Georgia has 21,559 registered sex offenders, including 4,127 offenders who live in the state but are registered with an out-of-state jurisdiction. Fulton County has the the most registered sex offenders in the state with 1,523. DeKalb County is No. 2 with 1,026…

It's not about being bullies or humiliating anyone, but in all fairness, these are the consequences of committing such horrible crimes. I think it's an extremely useful tool for parents (and in many ways a crime deterrent).   more ›

Midtown Residents Gather for National Night Out

The event featured live music and a visit from Atlanta Police Chief George Turner.

Dozens of Midtown residents gathered at Myrtle Street and 5th Street on Tuesday night to celebrate National Night Out, an event designed to develop relationships between citizens and the public safety officers who serve their neighborhoods. Hosted by the Midtown Neighbors' Association, the gathering allowed residents to meet police officers, firefighters and public officials.   Residents were also treated to live music performed by Mike Moerlins of Mike and the Mini Machine Guns.  Mary Moerlins said she was glad to see how many people turned out. The event "is fun for children. They love seeing the inside of the police car and the fire truck." Holly Hollingsworth also praised the event. "I feel better knowing that our policeman are getting…

Thieves hit Midtown CVS for smokes and weaves

Brick tossed through store window early Friday morning. In other public safety news, the APD will be conducting a career fair on Monday.

According to local news reports, the CVS at 842 Peachtree Street near 6th street was broken into and ransacked early Friday morning. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that thieves threw a brick through the front glass door and unlawfully entered the store shortly before 5 a.m. The newspaper indicated that police and store workers said that hair weaves and cigarettes were taken by the perpetrators. Several metro beauty stores have been victim to hair extension thefts in recent months. _______ Tired of hearing of Atlanta crime and want to do something about it? On Monday, the Atlanta Police Department will hold a career fair at its Public Safety Headquarters in downtown Atlanta. While the economy has been difficult for most employers…

Georgia Tech Police to Add Officers

Five new police officers will join the department.

Five new officers will join the Georgia Tech Police Department, according to a Monday announcement from the institute. The new additions will bring the total number of officers to 81. "With the new hires, we will be able to staff a plain clothes unit assigned to daily hot spots," Georgia Tech Police Chief Teresa Crocker said in the announcement. "The expansion of the crime prevention unit will help us better address the demands of the campus community." Two of the new officers will be assigned to crime prevention. The other three officers will be assigned to patrol -- including one officer who will work in partnership with the Atlanta Police Department in patrolling the northern border of Georgia Tech's campus, as well as the Home Park and…

More officers does not equal less crime. APD hired 200 additional officers in the last 3 years. However, crime or the perception of crime has increased in that same time. Efficient and effective policing is what reduces crime. I don't think APD or Tech police know how to do that yet.   more ›

Call if you have any information.

Atlanta police this week released surveillance photos of two men suspected in an armed robbery earlier this month in Midtown.  The incident occurred Jan. 3 at the parking deck of the Tenside Apartments on Northside Drive.  A male Georgia Tech student and a female, identified as Jeffrey Portman and Virginia Beasley, told police they were robbed after parking their vehicles.  "The victims advised officers that they had just parked when a vehicle pulled up near them and the passenger got out and robbed them," police spokesman Officer John Chafee said in a release. I believe APD works diligently to make our neighborhoods safer despite the limited resources they are working with. The biggest problem lies with the court system. In Midtown we are rarely ever dealing with a first-time offender, but with repeat felons who have yet to serve a day in prison. If the judges would lock up criminals underneath prisons and throw the key away, then we might start seeing…   more ›
