UPDATE: Howell Mill Road at 14th Reopened

Road damage near busy intersection had led to its closure by city crews on Tuesday night

Update: 11/22/12 11 p.m. The busy stretch along Howell Mill Road was reopened late Wednesday night by city crews who spent the day examining the problem and temporarily fixing the sinkhole. The cause has yet to be determined and crews expect to return Monday to continue further permanent repairs. Original Story: Concerns over sinking ground near a bridge on Atlanta’s westside led crews Tuesday evening to close a portion of Howell Mill Road between 14th Street and Huff Road. All lanes of the road going over the railroad tracks at the intersection have been closed to vehicular traffic until a bridge inspector can look at the road, which appeared to be sinking several inches.
