Atlanta BeltLine’s temporary public art initiative returns.
The BeltLine is in need of a few good artists. Following two successful years as Atlanta’s largest temporary art exhibition, “Art on the Atlanta BeltLine” has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for artists to solicit outdoor, temporary works of art for presentation on the Atlanta BeltLine in the fall of 2012. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals that marry their artistic visions with the landscape and sustainability themes of the Atlanta BeltLine. The submission deadline is April 16. In 2010, Art on the Atlanta BeltLine became the largest temporary public art exhibit in the City of Atlanta’s history with more than 270 visual artists, performers, musicians and historic preservationists. Last year, the number of projects increased by…

Next spring a trail linking Midtown, Virginia-Highland, Poncey Highland, Old Fourth Ward and Inman Park will open along an old rail corridor with cool, secluded city views. Phase one of the Eastside Trail -- which includes a 2.5-mile concrete path that will connect three parks: Piedmont Park, Freedom Park and Historic Fourth Ward Park -- should be complete in April, Atlanta BeltLine spokesman Ethan Davidson said Wednesday. "It's been a very interesting project so far," he said. The BeltLine began construction earlier this year, fencing off various portions to complete the work. The trail will run from 10th Street and Monroe Drive to DeKalb Avenue. The PATH Foundation has served as the construction manager for the project. Among the …

A rundown of the projects that could improve the Midtown community.
Midtown is scheduled to get traffic lights timed to speed traffic through its main streets, MARTA Arts Center station is set to benefit from system-wide maintenance and people will be using the Beltline by 2023, if these projects survive the last edits and, more dicey, a 10-county vote on a major new regional tax. In 2010, the state legislature told Georgia that if they want more transportation money, they could join together in groups of counties, write up lists of projects and ask their voters to approve a ten-year one-penny sales tax to pay for the wish list. In the ten-county metro Atlanta region, such a tax would net about $7.2 billion over 10 years, by the state's math. Now metro leaders, in the so-called Transportation Roundtable, …

Artists start to install exhibits along the BeltLine trail.
A serpentine tunnel of twigs soon will rise from the edge of Piedmont Park. Over the next month, earthy sculptor J.D. Koth will transform a grassy spot near Park Tavern in Midtown. Using branches and saplings, Koth will create a structure about 20 feet long that allows people to pass through as it curves along the ground. The sculpture is one of 66 projects commissioned for "Art on the Atlanta BeltLine," a public art program in its second year along the 22-mile loop. Koth and other artists began installing their projects this week. Art will be displayed or performed from September to November. The schedule will be released later this summer. Koth, an Edgewood resident who studies sculpture at Georgia State, said his dreamy design will …

Construction is underway on the Atlanta BeltLine's Eastside Trail. The 2.5-mile trail will run from Piedmont Park (at 10th Street and Monroe Drive) to DeKalb Avenue, bridging neighborhoods including Midtown, Virginia-Highland, Poncey Highland, Old Fourth Ward and Inman Park. A concrete trail will replace the current rocky terrain, which once was railroad tracks. The path will run by three city parks: Piedmont Park, Freedom Park and the new Historic Fourth Ward Park behind City Hall East. The trail should be complete in early 2012. Until then, parts of the trail will be fenced off to the public while the trail is constructed. More information is here.

Support art projects on the Atlanta BeltLine by eating at restaurants in Midtown. Every Thursday in June, restaurants around Atlanta (many in Midtown) are donating a portion of their sales to help pay for Art on the BeltLine, an annual public art exhibit that commissions artists to create works of arts along the 22-mile loop. The fundraiser begins June 3 and runs through June 30. Last year, more than 270 visual artists, performers, musicians and historic preservationists participated in Art on the BeltLine. See highlights from 2010 here. This year, the public art will be installed between July 25 and August 31. The work will be on display beginning in September. Soon, you'll have an easy walk from Piedmont Park to DeKalb Avenue. Construction is set to start on the two-and-a-half mile BeltLine trail that will bridge several neighborhoods, including Midtown, Virginia-Highland, Poncey Highland, Old Fourth Ward and Inman Park. A concrete trail will replace the current rocky terrain, which once was railroad tracks. The path will run by three city parks: Piedmont Park, Freedom Park and the new Historic Fourth Ward Park behind City Hall East. "You'll see a lot of activity start up in the next month," said Ethan Davidson, spokesman for the Atlanta BeltLine. Environmental work will begin any day now, Davidson said. That includes digging, grating and relocating utilities. After that is complete, work will …
