Holiday fun in Midtown's crisp air

Thanksgiving day brings with it skating's return to Park Tavern, and the horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday lights and carousel of Piedmont Park's, 'Season of Magic.'

Season of Magic returns to historic Piedmont Park on Thanksgiving day with nightly horse-drawn carriage rides through the elegantly lit park. The family-favorite, holiday carousel moves to the Meadow, next to Park Tavern, which has its own brand of happy holiday fun, but more on that in a moment. The Season of Magic celebration continues through January 6, 2013 as visitors are also welcome to stroll through the park and enjoy the festive lights and ornaments. Southwest Porch Lands at Piedmont Park

Southwest Airlines and Piedmont Park Conservancy celebrate the launch of the new "Southwest Porch at Park Tavern."

Southwest Airlines announced this week a gift in support of the Piedmont Park Conservancy (PPC), the organization dedicated to preserving and improving the popular Midtown park. And to celebrate the announcement of a new, multi-year investment in the park, Southwest also launched the "Southwest Porch at Park Tavern," a new outdoor space that will provide visitors with a relaxing spot to enjoy a year-round panorama of nature, events, and festivals, including a skating rink that will open on Thanksgiving Day. Southwest did not reveal how much it is paying for the partnership. The porch reinvigorates Park Tavern's patio with 200 new outdoor chairs and 50 tables, awnings and an expansive pergola. “We strive to be involved in the fabric of the …

Better this than raising our taxes. Good fro the Conservancy finds ways for funding outside of taxes. I do agree we do not need tacky advertising in the park, so far I have not seen it happening. Thanks!   more ›

Hug a Wookiee and more holiday weekend things to do

Residents and visitors urged to prepare for large crowds in Midtown and the surrounding area this holiday weekend

The Labor Day weekend is here and it should be quite the busy one in Midtown and the surrounding area. With events scheduled ranging from Dragon*Con to Atlanta Black Pride to Park Tavern music festivals to college and prep football games, the Atlanta Police Department is reminding residents to stay safe and prepare accordingly for expected traffic and crowds. “The best advice I can give is for folks to not leave anything of value in their cars,” said Maj. Wayne Whitmire, Commander of APD’s Zone 5. “It’s actually a crime where people have a great deal of power to avoid becoming a victim. Leave items of value at home, or take them with you if absolutely necessary. Do not leave them in your car.” Atlanta Black Pride kicked off Thursday and …

Digging Into 'Art on the BeltLine'

Artists start to install exhibits along the BeltLine trail.

A serpentine tunnel of twigs soon will rise from the edge of Piedmont Park. Over the next month, earthy sculptor J.D. Koth will transform a grassy spot near Park Tavern in Midtown. Using branches and saplings, Koth will create a structure about 20 feet long that allows people to pass through as it curves along the ground. The sculpture is one of 66 projects commissioned for "Art on the Atlanta BeltLine," a public art program in its second year along the 22-mile loop. Koth and other artists began installing their projects this week.  Art will be displayed or performed from September to November. The schedule will be released later this summer.  Koth, an Edgewood resident who studies sculpture at Georgia State, said his dreamy design will …
