Midtown Flashback: The Crazy Moon Fun at Loca Luna

While the dilapidated former Loca Luna building along 6th Street is currently being demolished, let your mind wander back a decade or so when the Latin-inspired Midtown restaurant was among Atlanta's most popular nighttime spots.

There was a time not long ago that when the moon rose, crazy good times ensued at Loca Luna’s original Midtown location at 836 Juniper Street. The moon set several years on the Loca Luna party and the building that once housed one of Atlanta’s earliest tapas restaurants is almost a memory. An Atlanta favorite, Loca Luna was forced closed on Juniper in 2006 and moved to the Amsterdam Walk district as Novare Group moved in to erect its nearby condo tower, Viewpoint. Now the dilapidated former Loca Luna building along 6th Street between Peachtree and Juniper streets is currently in the process of being demolished to make way for another Novare and Batson-Cook Development Company project, a 23-story 320-unit luxury apartment tower known as 100…

Keeping it Clean in the Midtown Sky

Would you do this job?

Our Midtown Pictures of the Day were taken on a windy afternoon this past week of The Proscenium building located at the corner of Peachtree and 14th streets. It was here that three men were busily performing their duties as skyscraper window washers on the 25-story building. This is a dangerous occupation, but on this day, all three appeared quite relaxed and were working efficiently. One even took a moment to smile and wave to the cameraman. There is no government licensing for skyscraper window washers in the United States, so anyone can do it. The pay’s decent and you get great views of the city. And if you want a job with constant challenges, this might be the one for you. See here for a listing of the tallest buildings in Atlanta. …

Love Is In The Air

Planning a wedding? Consider celebrating at one of these great spots in Midtown.

It was a beautiful weekend for a wedding as these two love birds no doubt knew. This shot of the unidentified couple was snapped late Saturday afternoon in Piedmont Park, only a hundred or so yards away from Park Tavern. Park Tavern is home to two distinctly different settings for memorable events such as weddings – the Piedmont Room and Piedmont Garden Tent. At 5,500 square feet, the Piedmont Room accommodates up to 225 guests for a buffet with dancing to follow on the gleaming hardwood floor. The 3,500-square-foot Piedmont Garden Tent comfortably accommodates 175 guests and can be expanded to 5,500 square feet for up to 400 guests. Both are located at 500 10th Street and see here to learn more about both.  Of course, there many other …

My Kingdom for a Porta Potty

Long bathroom lines frustrate Music Midtown fans

Today’s Midtown Patch Picture of the Day is something you might have seen this past weekend during Music Midtown at Piedmont Park. Or maybe even did it yourself! The “general” consensus from Music Midtown 2012 was that the entertainment was a hit, but long lines for food, drinks and the ATM were the pits. And the wait to use the Porta Potties, well, they just flat out stunk. Communications to Midtown Patch, as well as those commenting on online message boards, were mostly in agreement that the event’s promoters, Live Nation, neglected to provide enough portable bathroom facilities. At least not for the 50,000-plus people who wedged into the park’s meadow on Saturday. Festival-goers are mostly OK with waiting 15 minutes to relieve …

'We Will Never Forget'

On the 11th anniversary of 9/11, a tour of Midtown's American Red Cross facilities results in the discovery of Tuesday's Patch Pic of the Day.

Today’s Midtown Patch Pic of the Day is actually three photographs that were snapped during a tour of the American Red Cross Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter headquarters, located at 1955 Monroe Drive in Midtown, on Tuesday. The pictures are of a trio of mix-media artworks at the facility depicting images and words inspired by 9/11. It was unclear by examining the pieces just who produced them and a small sampling of Red Cross staff also produced no answers. However, in the spirit of remembrance of the date in U.S. history, the art works were indeed beautiful, inspiring and are featured here. The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and …

Westside Eyes in the Sky

Recent armed robberies and carjacking outside the Northside Tavern prompts owner to install new lighting and cameras high in the sky surrounding the exterior of the popular blues club.

A new week is upon us and we’ll celebrate such with another Midtown Patch Pic of the Day. Today we’re on the westside at the corner of Howell Mill Road and Brady Avenue. This is at the Northside Tavern (1058 Howell Mill Rd), where in a recent weeks there have been a series of armed robberies and attempted crimes executed against patrons exiting the blues club. Last week, Atlanta police released composite sketches of the suspects reportedly involved in a recent carjacking in the area. The recent crime wave prompted Northside Tavern owner Ellyn Webb to install new lighting and cameras high in the sky surrounding the exterior of the popular blues club in an effort to let would-be criminals know they’re being watched.
