Same-Sex Marriage Campaign Visits Local Courthouse

Nobody was surprised when probate court clerks at the DeKalb County Courthouse turned down five couples who tried to obtain marriage licenses on Monday afternoon. The We Do Campaign of the Campaign for Southern Equality organized the effort.

Five same-sex couples tried to obtain marriage licenses at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Decatur on Monday in a campaign designed to draw attention to Georgia's laws prohibiting marriage between people of the same gender. One after the other, five couples stepped up to the counter of the DeKalb Probate Court office and said they wanted marriage licenses. Mary Jones, an employee, told Rob Anglin and Jens Palsgaard of Austell that Georgia law does not allow people of the same gender to marry. Anglin and Palsgaard said they really loved each other and wanted to make it legal. "I understand that, sir, but it's the law," Jones said. Anglin said that Rosa Parks helped usher in a major change by refusing to give up her bus seat during he …

What legitimate authority does County employees of the people have to deny the right to marry? None. Marriage licenses were created to control something in which the government in a free society has no business.   more ›

More than 28,000 sign online petition request from lesbian Midtown business owner to Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy to share a meal together.

Six days after launching a Change.org petition urging Chick-fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy to meet with her family and have a conversation over dinner about family and faith, a lesbian mother of two and Midtown business owner has seen her petition collect 28,000 online signatures. Marci Alt is a co-founder of Carma Productions, located at 1116 West Peachtree Street, and its Gayborhood App. Carma Productions “is committed to LGBTQ community through the production and distribution of various publications and interactive media” according to its website. It's a great idea. I think many people in our country have never had a personal relationship with a gay family and they fear the unknown. Having a simple meal together will let both sides of this issue view each other from a human perspective. Mr. Cathy should take up this invitation even though he feels Marci Alt is wrong – after all, didn't Jesus break bread with those who were considered "…   more ›

Same-Sex Marriage: 'The pressure to pick a side has really amped up'

Fifty percent of Americans said in a recent Gallup Poll that same-sex marriage should be valid, up 10 percent from three years ago.

Saturday at Atlantic Station marks The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus’ fourth annual Big Wig Party fundraiser, “Once Upon a Wig.” The fairytale-themed party will bring together men and women of all ages as everyone is invited to dress as your favorite fairytale character for the opportunity to win the best-wig contest. The event runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and see here for more information on what should be a fabulous evening. Atlanta-based playwrite, author and actor Topher Payne knows a thing or two about wigs. He sported more than a few recently playing the title role in Process Theatre's “Auntie Mame,” and no doubt will don more while playing the title role in the world premiere of “Bat-Hamlet” with the Essential Theatre in July. His own …

This issue is a clear example of how our government divides us to control us. We have been trained to "pick a side", but they are false choices. The real choice is to get government out of the marriage business. What authority does my government employees have to tell me who I can or cannot marry. Marriage is a contract between two or more individuals. The only role government should have is …   more ›

Petition calls for Mayor Reed to endorse same-sex marriage

President Barack Obama said that he supported gay marriage last week. Now a local LGBT activist says Atlanta's mayor should do the same.

Gay marriage came to the forefront of the 2012 presidential campaign last week when President Barack Obama said on ABC's Good Morning America that he personally supported gay marriage. "You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently," Obama said in the interview with ABC. Obama's support for gay marriage came one day after North Carolina passed an amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, the Huffington Post Reported. Republican …

I'm all for equal rights for every citizen under the law, but coupling Reed's stance on gay marriage to your vote on TSPLOST seems a little absurd.   more ›
