Ralph Clark pleaded guilty Wednesday to embezzling more than $1.1 million from the Woodruff Arts Center while serving as its facilities director, the U.S. Attorney's office said. Clark, 42, of Ellenwood, Ga., could go to prison for up to 10 years and receive a fine of up to $250,000 when U.S. District Judge Julie E. Carnes sentences him Aug 7. “The Woodruff Arts Center is an important part of the fabric of our community,” U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in a statement. “This defendant embezzled over $1 million from funds intended for the benefit of our citizens.” According to Yates, the charges and other information presented in court: In June 2006, Clark was promoted to Director of Facilities at the Woodruff Arts Center. For the third year, the Woodruff Arts Center is making it easier for students to enjoy its offerings with a night dedicated to Tech students enjoying its various offerings for free. On Thursday, Sept. 27, students may attend this semester's Georgia Tech Night at the Woodruff Arts Center and visit the High Museum and enjoy a performance at the Alliance Theatre. Sunday June 3 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the plane crash at Paris’ Orly Airport that took the lives of 122 arts patrons from Atlanta who were part of a European arts tour planned by the Atlanta Art Association. The tragedy stunned Atlanta’s citizens, galvanizing them to build a Memorial Arts Building now part of the Woodruff Arts Center, which celebrates multiple art forms in one location. The Woodruff Arts Center held a free Community Day on June 3 in honor of the anniversary. Additionally on Sunday evening, the Woodruff hosted the Orly Commemoration Dinner, which was a private, ticketed event in the Galleria of the Memorial Arts Building. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform two free “Summer Concerts at Symphony Hall” made possible through the support of the Charles Loridans Foundation, Inc. The performances will take place on Saturday, July 7 and Saturday, August 11 in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. Atlanta financial executive and civic leader Virginia Hepner has been elected president and chief executive officer of the Woodruff Arts Center, succeeding Joe Bankoff who is retiring after six years of leadership at the Center. Hepner is a former senior officer of Wachovia Bank and a long-time leader in metropolitan Atlanta arts and culture.
