ReplyDo not give anyone change. Ever. For one, 9 times out of 10 they are using it for drugs or alcohol. And second these kinds of things can happen to you. It's a sad state we are in that you can't help anybody, but this is reality now. Best bet is to just donate to local charities.

On the article Fourth Ward Neighbors Votes 'No' on Lourdes Parking Lot Plan

Wow, that was very insulting. Everyone at the meeting, including myself and dozens of reasons not to build a surface lot. And we gave alternatives to handle parking. The church did not give one good reason as to why it had to turn an entire city block into a dead zone. The only thing I could see is just for convenience.
No one is trying to get rid of the church. We love it in our neighborhood. This is about smart, urban design. So please leave your stupid political views out of this.

ReplyI was at the meeting last night. And as a Fourth Ward Neighbors voting member I had to vote NO.
What is the point in building the streetcar if we keep giving people a reason
not to use it? If there is tons of parking available, most people will choose to
drive than take MARTA/Streetcar to the neighborhood. It completely defeats the
purpose of what the streetcar is supposed to do and is setting it up for
failure.I understand the church and even the businesses desire to make it easy for
people to visit. I just think we should step back and look at the big picture
here. We have a chance to be the most walkable neighborhood with good urban
design in the entire city. But giving over prime real estate to something (a
car) that spends 95% of it's time doing nothing and taking up space does not
seem like a good idea.It was also brought to our attention that the church has used the massive park lots at the King Center a couple blocks down the street in the past. They even admitted they could use them again. But they want a lot close to be more convenient. This convenience of parking lots has destroyed much of our cities history already. . Granted there is not really anything of historical value on the proposed lot. But building a surface lot guarantees that nothing great could be built there in the future.

Not sure how you think I was blaming the victim here. I absolutely was not. I live in the O4W and love living in a walkable neighborhood. I am not afraid to be out on the streets one bit.
It is just amazing that someone will put a gun in your face, threaten to kill you, and face a long jail sentence over a phone! But this problem with robberies is all coming down to how lucrative a business it is for selling stolen phones. This article was a real eye opener to what has become a problem not just in Atlanta, but all over the country.

ReplyAwesome, the fun continues. Instead of an iPhone tracker, there should be an app where you could remote detonate your phone.

Torrie,
I think these things are a form of reverse racism that is becoming a very big problem. This was just like the indecent the other week of a white guy getting pepper sprayed and robbed in Inman Park by a couple of black youths. Before attacking they yelled, "Hey rich boy".I've seen things like this happen many times in my neighborhood in the Old Fourth Ward. My neighbor has had rocks thrown at her house several times by the same black teenagers. My other neighbor got screamed at by a black man saying "Get out of our hood!!" I've had trash thrown in my yard many times by these same youth. It is a form of intimidation like you mention.
Now some might say in is a byproduct of gentrification. But most likely its bad parenting and the haves and have nots living side by side. As far as getting the APD to do something about it, I'm not really sure what they can do in these situations besides more patrols. And you can't arrest someone for bad parenting. Hopefully your efforts will have some positive impact.

Urbanist, if you moved away then why waste your time commenting on all these Atlanta sites? I don't get it. It's the worst kind of trolling.
