Yeah, I went to one of the implementation sessions and it definitely wasn't mentioned. I just emailed to ask if any additional info was available. They usually aren't allowed to talk about land purchases that haven't gone through, so they may not be able to share anything.
It sure would be great if it was a park rather than a parking lot.

ReplyThe Beltline has put out its 2012 report, and interestingly it includes "Glenwood West Park" (pg. 11) on the site where Fuqua has proposed his suburban retail project.
Anyone know about this? This is the first i've heard of a "Glenwood West Park."

ReplyWow. I appreciate the passion for making our schools better, but I think you've missed an important point.
What about the 5-year old whose parent won't and/or can't pay a weekly fee? What if the adult flat-out refuses? In order to accept your argument, we must accept the belief that 5-year olds should be further victimized if their parents don't meet your expectations.
I for one am unwilling to accept such a proposition. Until children have reached an age when it is reasonable for them to accept self-responsiblity, I would argue that we have a societal obligation to prepare them for the point when they have the capacity to begin taking care of themselves. To ignore this obligation is to devalue social mobility and to relegate future generations to the same cyclical poverty which affects the parents inspiring this vitriol.
I also agree with Tim, most citizens contribute to funding education whether directly or indirectly.

On the article UPDATED: Jackson High School Gun Incident Linked to 30 Deep Gang

ReplyIts worth keeping in mind that the term "gang" is applied pretty loosely to groups with varying degrees of organization. From the AJC's 2011 article, what currently exists of the "30 Deep Gang" sounds a lot more like some loosely organized criminals who've taken to calling themselves something that makes them feel important.
This isn't the Sinaloa Cartel or Los Zetas.
I say that not to excuse the behavior/risks (they should certainly be addressed), but its good to remember that just because some kids call themselves a gang, they may not be anything like the organized operations we see in the national/international media.
I've heard a lot of positive things about Ms. Johnson's leadership and I'm confident she will work to address this issue.
Hopefully, the new energy at Dunbar Elementary will also contribute to better outcomes for the Mechanicsville neighborhood's kids in the long run.

ReplyFrom Maureen's article on the court order: Walker said Sunday, “I was elected by the people, but I work for God."
Are you serious? Is he implying some divine right to be on the school board? I thought that kind of died with Louis XIV.
This is a power-hungry mess. I don't know what the solution is but it is a mess.

Reply@FamilyOfFour - that seems logical to me. I agree that there is a big difference in funding infrastructure (sidewalks, transit, roads) vs. a stadium. I'm not at all excited for us to spend any public money on this thing.
I do think that the Georgia Dome brings in tourism, which is why it makes some sense to fund it with a motel tax, but from what the AJC is reporting, the other people hosting events at the Dome are happy with its quality.

ReplyI wouldn't describe myself as a Beltline Nazi, but I do support the project.
I may be wrong, but my impression is that you are filing all of your lawsuits because you don't believe in any projects being funded by the government. I happen to disagree with that view and believe that local government has an important role to play in managing public goods such as sidewalks and the Beltline. In fact, I would like to see Atlana fund sidewalk repairs and maintenance through a tax system.
I do think it is important for any action taken by the city to be legal, so I appreciate your work in that respect. But ultimately, I think I probably disagree with you on what role our government should play in managing the city's public goods.

Reply@Atlanta Lawyer -
True or False: You are leading an effort to invalidate the Beltline's TAD?
True or False: You were sanctioned by a superior court judge for "unethical...and possibly illegal" conduct?

At the implementation meeting, they said construction south of Dekalb will start this fall. The first phase won't reach Glenwood, but it will extend the East Side trail down to Memorial.
