ReplyAnother factor contributing to the white flight (not mentioned in this article) was the highway the city of Atlanta planned to ram through Inman Park, Virginia Highlands and surrounding areas. The city was actively tearing down houses block by block, and for many it was enough to get out while they could. Of course many stayed and fought the city for years (and eventually won), which is why we (ironically) enjoy beautiful parks now like Freedom Park and the community playground on Virginia Avenue. It wasn't until that fight was over that the areas regained their attractiveness.

ReplyHunt - if you need an easy tool to make images from video keyframes I'd recommend the free VLC Player:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
Play your video, scrub to the frame you want, then select Video > Snapshot from the application menu. It'll save an image to your local drive you could then use.

I think a lot of people in Atlanta (now and for the past half century) overlook how much interest their is in the history and legacy of MLK amongst people who have never been to Atlanta. Granted, the King family has had its share of ridiculousness, but that can't overshadow the importance of the man and the economic/cultural opportunities that exist as a result.
It's true, seeing the tracks going down up/down Edgewood and Auburn Ave is an odd sight considering how little attention has been given to the area all these years. But if any area of Atlanta needs an economic shot-in-the-arm, especially considering its historical importance, OFW is it.
